juvenile idiopathic arthritis / juvenile rheumatoid arthritis

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is the most common chronic rheumatic disease in children, defined as autoimmune joint inflammation occurring before age 16 years and lasting at least six weeks with no identifiable cause. Its clinical significance lies in the diverse subtypes ranging from oligoarticular to systemic forms, each carrying distinct complications such as chronic anterior uveitis in ANA-positive patients and potentially fatal macrophage activation syndrome in systemic disease. Medical students must recognize that early aggressive treatment with methotrexate and biologics significantly improves long-term outcomes, and that silent uveitis requires routine ophthalmologic screening even in asymptomatic children to prevent vision loss.
