Burkitt lymphoma

Burkitt lymphoma is a high-grade mature B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma characterized by MYC translocation and an extremely high proliferation rate with Ki-67 approaching 100%, making it one of the fastest-growing human malignancies. Despite its aggressive nature, it is highly chemosensitive and considered one of the most curable cancers when treated with intensive short-duration regimens, with intrathecal methotrexate mandatory for CNS prophylaxis. Medical students should recognize its three clinical variants—endemic (presenting as jaw mass in African children), sporadic (typically ileocecal mass), and immunodeficiency-associated—and be alert to tumor lysis syndrome, which often occurs spontaneously even before chemotherapy initiation due to the rapid cell turnover.
